What is Football Betting Odds?
Football betting odds refer to the terms used to place bets on one of the two teams competing against each other in a match. It plays a crucial role in determining the outcome of win/loss for the participants. Each bookmaker provides different betting odds for players to choose from. Generally, football betting odds can be quite complex, represented by different numbers that inexperienced players may find difficult to comprehend.
Types of Betting Odds in Football
Asian Handicap (AH) Betting
Asian Handicap, or simply Handicap, is a popular type of betting that many Vietnamese football bettors participate in. This type of bet helps players understand which team is weaker or stronger.
In the Asian Handicap table, the stronger team is represented in red, while the weaker team is represented in black. There is no draw in the Asian Handicap; it only has upper and lower odds. Therefore, players can choose to bet on the team with a handicap or the team without a handicap. In cases where the two teams are evenly matched, the home team will be placed in the upper odds.
Asian Handicap odds ensure fairness for players' choices, as every match has weaker and stronger teams. To maintain fairness, the stronger team will be given a handicap by the bookmaker.
Asian Handicap is divided into various handicaps, namely:
Level Ball Handicap:
There is no handicap given to either team. If the match ends in a draw, regardless of the score (e.g., 0-0, 1-1, 3-3, 5-5), players will get their bets refunded, regardless of the team they chose. If you choose the winning team, you will win based on the bookmaker's odds.
1/4 Goal Handicap:
The upper team is given a 1/4-goal handicap against the lower team. Note that the bookmaker does not use the exact 1/4 handicap in the odds but uses other symbols like 0.0 – 0.5 for the upper team and 0.0, +0.5 for the lower team. If the match ends in a draw, those who chose the upper team will lose half of their bet, while those who chose the lower team will win half of their bet. If one of the teams wins, the winner will receive the corresponding winning bet amount based on the odds.
1/2 Goal Handicap:
The upper team is given a 1/2-goal handicap against the lower team. In case of a draw, those who chose the upper team will lose, and those who chose the lower team will win. If the upper team wins, those who bet on the upper team will win the corresponding bet amount based on the odds, and vice versa for the lower team.

3/4 Goal Handicap:
The upper team is given a 3/4-goal handicap against the lower team. This means that if the upper team wins by a margin of 1 goal, players who bet on the upper team will receive half of their winning bet amount. If the upper team wins by a margin of 2 or more goals, those who bet on the upper team will win their full bet amount based on the odds. Players lose their bet if they choose the lower team and it loses by a 1-goal margin.
1 Goal Handicap:
The upper team is given a 1-goal handicap against the lower team. If the upper team wins by a 1-goal margin, players will not lose their bet. If the upper team wins by a margin of 2 or more goals, those who bet on the upper team will win their full bet amount based on the odds.
European (1X2) Betting
European betting, also known as 1X2 betting, is considered the simplest type compared to others, and it also has the highest winning odds.
European betting is abbreviated as 1X2, where:
1 stands for placing a bet on the home team winning,
X stands for a draw, and
2 stands for placing a bet on the away team winning.
FT represents full-time betting, while 1H represents betting on the first half.
Over/Under (O/U) Betting
Over/Under, also known as Total Goals, represents the total number of goals scored by both teams after the match ends.
Players placing Over/Under bets do not need to worry about which team wins or loses but focus on the total number of goals scored in a match. Choosing Over means betting that the total goals in the match will be higher than the bookmaker's predicted number, while choosing Under means betting that it will be lower. If the match ends with a number of goals equal to the bookmaker's prediction, the player's bet will be refunded.
Penalty Betting
Penalty betting only occurs in cup matches or knockout rounds where the winning team needs to progress without using points for comparison. This type of bet only appears after 90 or 120 minutes in knockout matches, including the final match of the tournament.
Penalty betting options may include:
Tài/Xỉu Penalty (Total Goals in Penalty Shootout): Whether both teams will take all five penalties or not.
Odd/Even Penalty Goals: Whether the total number of successful or failed penalties will be odd or even.
Goal Betting
Goal betting is the most diverse and advantageous for bookmakers as it offers numerous types of bets, making it challenging for players to choose. Some examples include:
First Half/Second Half Goal: Whether there will be any goals in the first or second half and how many.
First Goal Scorer: Which team will score the first goal.
Last Goal Scorer: Which team will score the last goal.
First Team to Score 2 Goals: Which team will score 2 goals first.
There are many other variations such as player goal scorer, corner kicks, correct score, clean sheet, substitution, foul, offside, shot on target, own goal, comeback win, etc., giving players a wide range of options.
